Site Selection
The site for this custom cottage is rich in history and natural beauty. Two sisters bought this property in the early 1900s and transformed it into a place filled with charm, adventure, and magic. They called it “Fairyland.” Towering trees and private riverfront access create a secluded setting for relaxation and outdoor recreation. But, over the years, the property fell into disrepair. Then, it was purchased by our clients in the late 1900s. Their goal was to honour the property’s past while modernizing it for the future. Re-building on this site required careful navigation of municipal regulations to determine permissible building zones. Design + Build
While the steep slope toward the river presented some challenges, it also provided an elevated plateau to build the cottage. This was the perfect location to ensure stunning views of the Moon River, preserve the land’s integrity, and enhance nature’s dramatic effect. The exterior combines natural stone, timber framing, and other timeless materials to reflect the property’s historical roots. Rounded doorways were included as nods to the past and create a home design rich in character. A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the living room anchors the space and pays homage to the property’s heritage. We built structural elements adapted to the landscape to ensure long-lasting durability and protect this custom cottage from harsh winters.
Interior Design
The interior design features shiplap wall cladding and warm wood tones to create a rustic atmosphere. The open floor plan maximizes the use of available space. Vintage-inspired finishes, exposed brick, a farmhouse sink, and historical blue-painted doors make the kitchen a true classic. Large windows enhance the connection to the outdoors by framing river views and filling the space with natural light. Spa-like features, like a freestanding slipper tub, offer a place for hot baths with scenic views. Unique tiles and custom woodwork provide a seamless blend of old-world charm and contemporary design .
