Windswept beauty in the South Georgian Bay
Nestled on the shoreline of Georgian Bay, the South Georgian Bay cottage is a windswept beauty. The existing cottage was beautiful, but our Gilbert + Burke addition took it to the next level. With two stories of additional space, a wraparound covered porch and stunning new windows, the already stunning home became a true showstopper.
What made this beautiful project unique?
In the South Georgian Bay addition, we were looking to add on to the home and, in turn, solve the problem of lake winds blowing water in through the cottage windows. The clients also wanted to add on to their space and have their own private master suite. We reached every single one of our clients’ goals with a little creativity, which meant doing everything from installing new, wind-resistant lakeside windows and adding two entire stories of space to acquiring soil engineering permits and making our addition seamless.
What were the most interesting and captivating design choices?
With the South Georgian Bay addition, we worked to make sure that the new addition wasn’t obvious. We added on two full stories to the home, but needed to engineer it in a way that it didn’t look like anything happened to it. In turn, we searched painstakingly for styles and finishes that meshed with the existing design. The wind and water problem with the South Georgian Bay home was solved by wind-resistant glass that is as beautiful as it is functional, preserving lakeside views wherever possible with the ceiling and window in the master bedroom. Glass railings were installed so they didn’t take away from the water’s view and white materials were chosen to add brightness to the home, the addition extended the home’s beauty and space. We added beauty in privacy with the built-in closet in the master bedroom that included a custom millwork feature housing and an upstairs stacking washer/dryer. e also created a passageway from the existing cottage to the addition with an arched entrance and custom architectural moulding. Along with the cottage renovation, we added new stairs and refurbished flooring.
