The Projects That Made Us: Contemporary Boathouse + Luckey Lane Cottage
Over the past 20 years, we’ve been lucky to have some incredible projects — like this cottage country family complex that was built in stages.
Year: Project Started in 2019
In the last 20 years, we’ve been incredibly lucky and blessed to be a huge part of beautiful, unique builds and projects. We are huge fans of anything that helps us stretch our creativity, especially when it comes to a project like this Contemporary Boathouse & Luckey Lane cottage. Nestled right in Muskoka cottage country, the cottage and boathouse are part of a larger complex. With three existing buildings — a guest cottage on a private lake, the larger cottage on Skeleton Lake — the family compound continues to have the chance to grow and expand into new projects.

With the Contemporary Boathouse and Luckey Lane cottage, we dealt with the challenging winter weather and the difficult topography that we were building on. However, we also had an incredible canvas to build on. Our client was a busy Toronto entrepreneur, we knew that we wanted to create a contemporary oasis on 180 acres of private land off of Skeleton Lake for him and his family to enjoy. The first step was to build a private road into the lake in order to begin construction on the secluded guest cottage. When building the guest cottage, we focused on brightness with tons of windows, along with wood features and paneling to echo the outdoors. For the boathouse situated on the Skeleton Lake shoreline, we needed more private road construction and had to bring in all services to the new lakeside site which will be the site for a future cottage. We strived for a contemporary and sleek entertainment space that still felt warm and family-oriented. With a roomy deck and underwater lighting, the boathouse is small but packs a massive punch with dedicated areas for dining, reclining, and sitting by the propane fire pit. The views of the lake are unobstructed by using topless railings.

Designed with Peter Groza’s signature technique, the Contemporary Boathouse and Luckey Lane cottages were an incredible build that we are stunningly proud of. With a mixture of classic Muskoka siding colours, cedar and sleek glass, the project allowed us to combine together some of our favorite elements of nature with a contemporary look that made both us and our clients happy. With flashes of luxury and a welcoming feel, the Contemporary boathouse and Luckey Lane cottage are a fabulous Gilbert + Burke testimony of design build excellence.
